4 Ways To Incorporate Accessories Into Your Outfit

Accessories can make or break an outfit. When chosen carefully, they can make even the most boring ensemble into an instant hit. Or, they can bring several different pieces together into a look that is stylish and polished.

1. A Pop Of Color

Styling a neutral outfit or something in black or white is relatively straightforward. Most colors work well. You can go for the simple option of silver or gold jewelry and a minimal handbag. Or, you could opt for something a little bolder. I.e. jewelry in vibrant colors, a scarf, and sunglasses.

When styling outfits with brighter colors, it can be harder to coordinate. It is important that colors don’t clash or fight for attention. Unless, of course, this is the look you’re going for. Colors that are next or close to each other on the color wheel work well together.

Try not to introduce too many colors to an outfit. The effect can be overpowering. Instead, stick to one or two main colours.

2. Shoes

If you take one dress and match it to five different pairs of shoes, the look will be different each time. There are no rules when it comes to matching shoes. It’s worth experimenting to figure out what works best. Sometimes, unexpected combinations can look great and bring something different to the look.

Try to complement your clothing. Women's dress shoes come in many different styles. So, if you’re wearing a busy outfit, opt for simple shoes. For simpler outfits, you can afford to wear a busier shoe style. This is true whether you’re dressing for a day at the office or a glam night out.

It is also important to match your shoes to the occasion. Though there is some leeway here, think about what looks appropriate. For example, you wouldn’t wear a pair of flip-flops to a glam evening event. Similarly, you wouldn’t wear over-the-knee boots to the office.

Comfort is also important and should not be underestimated. We all have shoes that we love, but that don’t love our feet. If you’re event lasts for several hours, do yourself a favor and wear something you feel comfortable in. Your feet will thank you for it.

3. Scarves

Scarves are wonderful, versatile accessories that have the ability to immediately transform an outfit. A simple black dress can look completely different with a colorful scarf.

Learning how to tie a scarf in several different ways is a good skill to have. There are many ways to do this, from the French knot to the classic loop.

4. Bags

Though you don’t wear a bag as such, it is still part of your outfit. How you coordinate your LBD will change the whole look. A large, oversized tote in a bright color, says sophisticated office look. While a simple black clutch, says drinks after work. And then there are some bags that go with everything.

Practicality is also important. You’re not going to fit your laptop in a slim purse. If your outfit needs to last from day to evening, it’s a good idea to switch part way through the day. You don’t want to be dragging your work briefcase along to your night out.

There are many ways to style an outfit. There no rules. You get to decide what looks right and wrong. Experiment a little and find what works for you. Don’t be afraid to try unexpected combinations. Sometimes happy accidents make the best outfit choices.
