Brand New Homeowners: What You Need to Know

Congratulations; you are a homeowner! If you have just moved into a new home, it must be so nice when everything is unpacked. Then you can settle in and make the home your own. When you have just moved in, it is the best time sort through a lot of things. There are plenty of things that if sorted now, will save you lots of money over time.

Does you home have insulation? The best ways to check this are by looking in the loft. Fiberglass insulation is quite obvious so you should be able to tell if you have some or not. If you do, check the thickness of it. It could need replacing. If you don’t, it is something that needs to be corrected as soon as possible. Insulation in the roof saves a lot on heating bills, as the heat will stay in the house. No insulation and it will just disappear. Cavity wall insulation is also worth looking into. This helps your heating bill save a lot of money, too.

When you think about your heating, it is a good idea to check your new home’s furnace or boiler. For a lot of us, paying thousands of dollars for a furnace up front just isn’t possible. So check the quality of it. If it needs to be replaced, there are a few options. Furnace rental is popular for a lot of reasons. Quite often the costs of damage or repairs lay with the rental company. So it can save you money in that way too. Just think about your personal situation and finances, to see if it is worth if for you.

As well as heating the home, you might need to think about keeping cool too. So now is a good time to install some ceiling fans if there aren’t any. Being able to use these will cost less than using air conditioning. So it is perfect if you are in a climate where that will suffice. It will stop you having to buy individual desk fans for each room too.

Using a tumble dryer costs a lot of money. So as you are in your new home, it is a good idea to install a clothes line. This could be put up in your laundry room or in the garden. Heating a dryer costs so much money, so if you can eliminate that, you will be onto a winner. It is also a good idea to check that your laundry machine washes on cold. This will save you a lot of money each time you do laundry.

At the moment, you will be finalizing new contracts with companies for your internet, phone and energy services. Make sure that you shop around for the best deal that you can get. There are quite a lot of offers for new customers. Try to get an energy provider to lock you in at a fixed rate for a while. Then you know for a set amount of time, that that is all you will be paying for your bills.
