Knowing Your Skin Type

For some people it is utterly confusing to know and understand your skin type. After studying beauty therapy I now have a better understanding and knowledge about skin types and I wish to share it with all of my readers.

Knowing Your Skin Type

Skin types

Dry- Traits of dry skin

  • Feeling of tightness (especially after being in contact with water).
  • Skin feels/looks rough.
  • Itchy, flaky, scaly or peeling skin.
  • Sallow coloured skin.
  • Thin textured skin.
  • More visible wrinkles.
Products for dry skin

  • Mild/gentle cleansers.
  • 'Rich' moisturizer. 
  • Gentle scrub to help remove dry/flaky areas of skin.
  • Nourishing face mask.
  • moisturiser for full benefit.
Oily- Traits for oily skin

  • Skin has a greasy/shiny appearance.
  • Thick/ course textured skin.
  • Large pores.
  • Acne.
  • Blackheads.
  • Less to visible wrinkles.
Products for oily skin

  • Gel- based cleanser.
  • Light/controlling moisturizer.
  • A face scrub to deeply clean the pores.
  • Skin clearing face mask (such as Clay).
  • Regular use of steam as this will help to warm-up the skin and open the pores.
Combination- Traits for combination skin

  • Oily t-zone (forehead, nose and chin), drier cheeks.
  • This is the most common skin type.
  • May have larger pores/blackheads.
  • Thicker skin texture.
Products for combination skin

  • Foam- based cleanser.
  • Two different masks. A moisturizing type for the cheeks (dry areas) and a deep cleansing type for the t-zone (oily areas).
  • A face scrub to clean out pores and remove any dry/flaky areas of skin.
  • Regular use of steam as this will help to warm-up the skin and open the pores.
Normal- Traits for normal skin

  • Skin looks clean and smooth.
  • Healthy complexion.
  • This is the rarest skin type.
  • Skin isn't too dry or too oily.
  • No/ few imperfections.
  • Barely visible pores.
Products for normal skin

Regularly use a gentle skin care regime to keep the skin looking nice and healthy.

Conditions of the skin

It doesn't matter what skin type you have, anyone can develop sensitive or dehydrated skin in their lifetime.

Sensitive- Traits for sensitive skin

  • Stinging, itching and burning skin.
  • Redness, dryness, scaly or peeling skin.
  • Allergies (bumps/hives).
Products for sensitive skin

Invest in gentle skin care products tailored towards sensitive skin types. Lavender, rose and chamomile are all soothing ingredients.

Dehydrated- Traits for dehydrated skin

  • Wrinkled and creasing of the skin. 
  • When skin is pinched, it doesn't bounce-back quickly.
  • Lacklustre, tired and dull looking skin.
  • Skin soaks up moisture.
  • Skin may look dry or oily.
  • Feeling of tightness.
Products for dehydrated skin

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Steer clear of harsh products which will strip the skin of its natural moisture.
  • Hydrating products (Hyaluronic acid or Glycolic acid are amazing at hlding onto moisture).
